Itís time for people to know about the economic developers in our state and the work they do!

My favorite part of being President of CEDAS is letting people know about CEDAS and our incredible members.  During this year’s legislative session, “economic development” has been a commonly used phrase, but surprisingly many do not know that we have a cadre of professional economic developers already working across Connecticut.

This year, we are trying to raise our profile.  Already we have submitted testimony on legislative bills involving the Transfer Act, Opportunity Zones, and Enterprise Zones.  On April 23rd, we will host a meeting with new DECD Commissioner David Lehman at 3 pm at Eversource in Berlin.  The entire membership is invited.  On Thursday April 25th, we will co-sponsor a Spotlight on Main Street event in Manchester with CT Main Street.  On May 8th, we will be at the Capitol celebrating Economic Development Week and unveiling our long-awaited best practices program.  And on May 22nd, we will host a special event focused around biotech and the role of economic developers in attracting and retaining high-tech companies.  For a volunteer organization, it’s a busy schedule!  Our Programs Committee has done a great job putting it together.

The goal for all of these events is to let our leaders and policymakers know that economic developers are here in this state and we have a lot that we can share.  It’s important that the Governor and legislators hear from economic developers as they craft a new economic growth strategy for Connecticut.  It’s also important that we are fully prepared to help and do our part.  That’s why we are launching a best practices program in municipal economic development and land use.  If we are effective locally, we will bring more credibility to our profession and our members.  Full details of the program will be announced on May 8th.

We hope you can join us at all of these upcoming events.  We need to hear your voice.  And please share the story of the tremendous economic development professionals that we have in our state and the work they do every day.
